AFTERCARE AND FOLLOW UP
You will be discharged from the Sigulda Hospital on the 3rd – 4th day after the surgery. A statement from the hospital for you and your GP will be provided in English as well as necessary prescriptions for medications and vitamin supplements.
Obesity and overweight is a chronic and often a lifelong disease, and there is no reason to deem there is one short permanent cure for it. However, bariatric surgery and responsibly considered aftercare with moderate lifestyle changes lead many patients to achieve significant long-term weight loss results that are followed by tremendous health and social benefits, and increased life expectancy.
Pain control. It is normal to experience some discomfort and pain after the surgery. There is no reason to suffer, the pain should be controlled to make you able to walk and breathe deeply after the surgery. Ask for pain medication to our nurses in the hospital. Normally the pain is gone, when you will be discharged from the hospital.
Hydration. You will be encouraged to start drinking by small sips soon after the surgery. It is important to drink at least 1.5 l of water / fluids each day to help prevent dehydration, kidney stones, and constipation.
Nutrition. A post-operation 4 stages diet plan will be provided to you along with instructions on how to eat, drink and avoid eating side effects such as dumping syndrome and indigestion.
Supplements and medication. Your surgeon will provide you prescriptions and instruct you on vitamin and mineral use and also other medication use after the surgery.
Moving. Your surgeon will encourage you to walk soon after your weight loss surgery and will want you to continue walking each day during your recovery in the hospital as well as after discharging from the hospital. Walking after the surgery will stimulate circulation and help in healing process as well as prevent the complication risk such as blood clots formation.
Follow up. You should follow your surgeons follow up instructions weeks, months and years after your weight loss surgery. We will keep in touch with you after the surgery at regular intervals to monitor and support your success and provide you surgeon’s advise, recommendations, view your blood test results, if necessary, up to 2 years after the surgery. Following the aftercare period, you will still continue to have access to email, online and telephone support for life.
