UPPER ENDOSCOPY

Upper endoscopy is an absolutely must have examination prior to the bariatric surgery. We at Weight Loss Latvia entrust this important procedure to the excellent specialists of gastro-intestinal diseases center “Gastro” in Riga.

THE PROCEDURE

Upper endoscopy (also called ‘fibro-gastroscopy') is the only method in the examination and treatment of digestive organs, with the help of which it is possible to examine the esophagus, stomach and duodenum "from the inside" and, if necessary, perform various diagnostic and therapeutic actions inside the organs.

During the upper endoscopy, the doctor inserts a high-quality optical instrument into the digestive system through the patient's mouth, examines and evaluates the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum from the inside in detail.

👉 Upper endoscopy, when performed by an experienced and skilled physician with modern equipment, is a safe and harmless procedure for the patient.

👉 Upper endoscopy is the most accurate method for early diagnostics and treatment of inflammations, ulcers and tumors of the digestive system.

👉 With the latest generation of endoscopes, it is possible to document the entire endoscopy scene on video and electronically store or transmit it using any modern image processing technology.

👉 A diagnostic upper endoscopy usually takes 10-20 minutes. The total time spent in the medical institution is about 1-1.5 hours.

HOW TO PREPARE

The patient may not eat on the day before the examination! A light dinner is preferred the night before, but not later than 19:00. Only water without gas can be drunk after the dinner. Prescribed oral medications should be taken with a small amount of water not later than 6 hours before endoscopy. It is not allowed to drink liquids 4 hours before the examination.

SEDATION

In order to improve the quality of endoscopy and prevent unpleasant sensations, during endoscopy the doctor uses special medications, which are usually injected into the patient's neck and/or injected into a vein. Some medications can make you drowsy and slow your reaction time for several hours. The patient is warned about the administration of medication before the endoscopy, and it must be remembered that driving vehicles must be avoided for at least 12 hours after the endoscopy.

During the endoscopy, without special prior preparation of the patient, the doctor can perform other actions, such as polyp removal, extracting foreign bodies (swallowed buttons or coins).
